Bullying is a serious problem in our society. The Australian National Centre against Bullying reports that 1 in 4 children and teens will be affected by bullying during their schooling. Anti-bullying education has been demonstrated to produce improvement in students’ attitude towards bullies and victims, perceived effectiveness of intervening in bullying incidents, and actual rates of interventions in such incidents. It is necessary to change how bullies and victims see themselves: to make bullies aware of their aggression and its consequences on their peers and to make victims understand that change can happen.
Hi. My name is Muhktar Kadiri. I am the Head instructor at Palace Martial Arts. In our school, we firmly believe in the dignity and inherent worth of the individual, and that every individual has the right to a sense of self-esteem and
safety.
The Anti-Bullying Seminar teaches participants:
Awareness – How to identify predator behaviour
Avoidance – Realistic ways to avoid being a target of bullying
Assertiveness – How to stop bullying behaviour
The Anti-Bullying Seminar runs for 2 hours and includes the following sub-topics:
• Topic I – What is bullying? Why do people do it? Why is it bad to bully others?
• Topic II – What should we/shouldn’t we do when we see others being bullied?
• Topic III – How should you deal with bullying?
• Topic IV – Buddying
Each topic is designed to give participants realistic strategies for dealing with most school or neighbourhood bullying scenarios.
The goal of this program is to minimize the effects of predatory behaviour in primary school and middle school-aged children. This will be accomplished through role playing, small group discussions and empathy training.
The prevalence of bullying is one challenge to the self-esteem and safety of our young people. It is a challenge we believe our young people can cope with, given the skills and self-belief to do so.
This is an event that has run annually since the year 2010. More than a hundred community members attended each year and the program has been widely supported by the local business community as well as local media. It is a non profit event and free of charge to all attendees.
We hope your family will find the Anti-Bullying Seminar interesting, enjoyable, and a stimulus for discussion.
Thank you for your attendance.
Muhktar Kadiri, Chief Instructor
