Post: Our Lil Kangas (3-4 years old) gain motor skills, learn social skills, and develop a sense of confidence through playful, multisensory martial arts classes.
3 and 4 year olds learn through exploring, using all the senses. They are better able to ignore distractions and focus on the task at hand when they are playing. Our martial arts classes use games to help young children focus and persist in completing tasks. As they grow, they are able to make plans and complete tasks. They want to be more self-reliant and seek to expand their autonomy and the areas of their lives in which they can be independent decision-makers. The activities in class provide opportunity for problem-solving and independent decision making. Our emphasis on life skills and character development, with a focus on helping children make decisions about how they will behave, supports and enhances this intellectual developmental stage.
3 and 4 years old are learning to identify feelings and recognize the cause of them, and as the mature begin to realize that others may have different feelings to themselves. In their interactions with peers, 3 years old may offer simple help, such as a hug, to those who are upset, while 4 year olds show greater interaction with peers, such as by joining a group play situation, being sympathetic to others, or suggesting ways to resolve conflict. Our program supports 3 and 4 year olds’ emotional and social development by providing a safe and secure environment for exploration and play, and social opportunities through the games and activities undertaken in class.
3 and 4 year old have good abilities to run, jump, climb, and perform other large-muscle activities. 4 year olds show greater skills at hopping, skipping, marching and galloping. 3 and 4 year olds can catch and throw a ball. Our program works with the abilities and skill levels of 3 and 4 year olds to help improve gross motor skills, dexterity, and agility.
In our program, your 3 or 4 year old will practice and improve the following skills:
Physical skills
• Running skills: forwards, backwards, sideways, around a circle
• Jumping/hopping skills: two feet, one foot, over objects
• Kicking skills: forwards, sideways, in circles
• Balance skills: while walking, on one leg, kicking
• Throwing and catching skills: underhand and overhand, large and small balls, bouncing balls
• Striking skills: at the air, at targets
Intellectual, Emotional, and Social Skills
• Counting skills: counting strikes, kicks, hops
• Following instructions and commands: following two- and three- step instructions, obeying commands, following the leader, practice stop, go, sit, and stand
• Social interaction: taking turns, saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, saying ‘sorry’ and forgiving
• Decision making: making choices between two things, controlling anger
The Lil Kangas program is a pre-white belt program, and practice of conventional martial arts techniques is not the main focus of the class. Children this age are not physically, intellectually, or emotionally ready for a full martial arts program. However, the martial arts paradigm has tremendous value for students this age through the discipline and confidence it engenders. Our classes help support and advance your child’s physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development through the use of martial arts to engage, motivate, and inspire your child.
